Facial development

A child’s facial development is evolves downward and forward. Traditional orthodontics which is still taught in most programs solves a patient’s crowding problem by extracting teeth. With the additional space from the removed teeth, the remaining teeth in the upper or lower jaws are brought together to fix the crowding, but also has the unfortunate side-effect of constricting the upper or lower jaws. Case studies have shown that constricting the jaws during a child’s development will have adverse effects on how they bite together, Temporo-mandibular joint(TMJ), airway, and facial profile.  Call us for a consult with Dr. Keri Do at Manoa Dental, and she can evaluate how it will work best for your child.

Early Intervention for Kids

Traditional orthodontics have always taken a reverse approach to treating children. Examination, diagnosis, and treatment usually begins at a specific age, most commonly around ten years old. However, treatment usually will begin even later into their early-teens. Less invasive treatment should be used at a younger age to guide their facial development rather can correct development that has already displayed problems. Early intervention is always a key factor to avoid lengthy and costly treatment which is similar to treating a cavity early before it develops into a major health and expensive problem. Guided development

Orthodontics(braces) are an excellent treatment to correct the crowding of teeth. Although it’s best to evaluate children while young. This way, a more guided development of their growth with minimally invasive treatment can be used rather than correct the crowding after it has occurred.  Facial development is most critical and when diagnosed and treated correctly, can avoid braces altogether. Call us for a consult with Dr. Keri Do at Manoa Dental, and she can evaluate how it will work best for your child.
